Access to quality healthcare is fundamental to the wellbeing of every resident, worker and visitor in Jasper. It is also an increasingly important factor in a community's ability to attract and retain the workers and families that keep the local economy running.
Like many small, remote communities in Alberta, Jasper faces real challenges in recruiting and retaining physicians. This affects our ability to provide timely care to residents, supports the case for workers considering whether to make Jasper their long-term home and has implications for the community's ability to serve the hundreds of thousands of visitors who pass through each year.
A healthy community is one that businesses can recruit to, that workers want to stay in and that visitors feel safe in. We support physician attraction and retention as a community-wide priority with direct relevance to Jasper's economic sustainability. JPCC intends to engage meaningfully on this issue and believes a coordinated, multi-sector approach is the right path forward.
JPCC is in the early stages of establishing a working group to explore physician attraction and retention in Jasper. We plan to bring together local healthcare providers, the municipality, relevant provincial representatives and members of the business community to develop a coordinated approach.
This is an emerging area of JPCC's advocacy work. We will share updates as the working group takes shape.
